Beats 1 confusion

I’m looking forward to the launch of Beats 1 for a couple of reasons, but mostly because I have no idea what it’s supposed to be. I was at the keynote, I read the New York Times article, and I read Apple’s Web site. I still have no idea what it is.

  1. Is it streaming in real-time never to be heard again? Is it streaming but each DJ’s show will then also be available as a podcast?

Have things gotten so bad in popular music that discovering or working with Sam Smith is a big deal? Lot’s of questions.

  2. I think it’s just an actual radio station with DJ’s. Like listening to Hits 1 (or, indeed, BBC1) on SiriusXM.

  3. I would imagine it’s more of the first, though I’m sure some of the interviews and such will be available in Connect or as podcasts.

The main idea is it’s a global radio station. If you’re listening to Alabama Shakes in [insert city], I’m listening to them in South Carolina, someone’s listening in London, etc.

  4. No idea really? 24 hour live radio station available to stream via the built-in Music app – I appreciate there may be technical questions folks will want to know but I am sure most people have listened to a radio show in their lives to understand the basics? No?

  5. Yea, I agree. I’m also assuming more “stations” will be added if Beats1 is successful.

  6. So it’s exactly like iTunes Radio?
Just a new name for the same old thing?
    With a new price?

  7. Pretty sure iTunes Radio didn’t have DJ’s and it was curated by software – that seems to be the obvious difference for a start.

  8. I (think I’ve) got Trent Reznor’s explanation as far as the 24-hour “global” radio station is concerned. He actually made sense (other than just about everybody else in this part of the show).

What confuses me (and maybe that is also part of Jim’s confusion?) is that looking at the new “landing page” in the (beta) Music.app brings up a list of, well, genres (like, over here, pretty menacing stuff like “German Streetrap”… which is pretty much like white punks on dope gone awry). As we never had iTunes Radio over here, I can’t compare, but that seems to be the same thing?

Apple really failed to explain a lot of things (what happens to iTunes Radio where it exists, what happens to iTunes Match, what does this new radio station actually do, 24 hrs music or other programming, too… etc.). Maybe all that is answered on Apple’s web site somewhere, I just don’t really feel like spending time researching a product that even the creators can’t explain in over an hour. (But, to be honest, I am not really that interested in streaming or radio.)

  9. Beat 1 will include (what used to be) iTunes Radio. The interesting thing is will this new iTunes Radio will be available +100 countries Apple Music’s supposed to be? If it is then a lot of countries will automatically get iTunes Radio as a bonus on Apple Music.
