This doesn’t feel like a good thing. It certainly won’t be the last merger or acquisition in the “new media journalism” space, either.
I stopped going there ever since they “disabled” the comment system. I only relied on comments after reading (or skimming) each articles. I’m glad you’re still keeping your comments 🙂
Agreed. I like comments but they have to be ruthlessly policed in order to keep out the riffraff. 🙂
Yep, commenting kept them honest. I thought most of the people there were okay. Kara and Walt were the main attraction, as well a few other writers.
When they dropped commenting, it got frustrating, because they definitely needed it to keep a few of their writers honest.
Shawn’s right, of course. Commenting has to be controlled. ARS Technica is probably tops in keeping control of comments and yet leaving most people free to express themselves.

They seemed to have not bothered with any optimization of their business. 44 full-time staff? On a site that seemingly relied on events for revenue? Hell, I don’t care how they got revenue… forty-four full-time people for RECODE? Come on…
