Yosemite clusterfuck

Craig Hockenberry:

I started reporting these issues early in the Yosemite beta release and provided tons of documentation to Apple engineering. It was frustrating to have a Mac that lost its network connection every few days because the network interfaces were disabled while waking from sleep (and there was no way to disable this new “feature”.)

Marco Arment and many others are having similar issues.

  1. I’ve had a similar problem with my printer, which I fixed in the end by plugging it directly into an airport extreme base station instead of using its own wifi connection.

  2. I’m glad this came up as I was just chatting with my friend about how Yosemite killed my WiFi Airplay connection to an elderly Airport Express. Every other device on my network can use it, but the single Yosemite machine.

  3. I’ve had less loss of WiFi connectivity with my 2014 Mac Mini and Yosemite than I did with my 2009 Mac Mini. In either case, turning the WiFi on and off from the menubar has always got it going again. Also, I have some other issues which I’m not sure can’t be attributed to my router or internet connection, so it’s a particularly tricky bug to track down. (Windows PCs and other devices I have exhibit similar occasional connectivity loss.)

  4. Haven’t noticed this happening. My Yosemite problems, which are new in 10.10.3, are mostly video related.

However, I have short Bonjour names. I think that might help the problem.

  5. I had the naming problem too. A post by schrecktech on this Apple discussion fixed it: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6640659?start=0&tstart=0

    From that post:
First, I turned off networking which was WiFi in my circumstance.

Next, I named my computer back to the original desired name in the “Sharing” system preference without the (n).

    Then I added a “–no-namechange” parameter in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist.

    Unloaded and loaded the deamon:

    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist

Last, I reconnected to the network.

  6. Windows 10 is a very solid looking release.
Yosemite still isn’t fixed after 1 year. And a new version will come this summer. It will offer new features that no one will care about or use except the Mac tech press. It will probably have a new feature that requires a new hardware purchase.

Meanwhile, core functionality will be sacrificed at the altar of “It just works” (not).
