Norway to become first country to kill off FM radio
Norway will officially kill off FM radio in 2017. Will the dominos fall? Is Norway the first of many?
I do not like this.
Jumping from one sinking ship to another. The idea of “tuning in” to radio and TV seems quaint in the age of the internet and a la carte programming.
FM is a worldwide standard.
Digital radio has a least 2 flavors. Not good.
What about car radios?
Cars have a very long life. And, today, most radios are built in by the car manufacturer. How will you replace your FM radio?
You won’t.
You just won’t use it, like a lot of people already don’t use it.
(If you really want to, you get a separate unit that connects to the car via Bluetooth, I suppose.
But most people don’t keep cars for decades. Or even most of a decade.)
FM radio will still be around in the US 10 years from now. Past that, I wouldn’t want to bet. Hard to imagine, but some people do still listen to radio.
Because more people hang on their cars longer now. That’s where most listen to get FM radio.
Although unavailable for comment, Freddy Mercury left a recorded statement:

After reading the article, this is more like the US transition several years ago of broadcast TV from analog to digital. More channels, more programming choices, etc.
Now will the Norwegian government subsidize digital convertors for old analog radios?
