Handy Apple Watch quick start guide

Nice little Apple Watch interface flow diagram from Ben Lovejoy at 9to5mac.

Here’s a link to the article. And here’s a link to the graphic itself.

  1. Ben Lovejoy didn’t create this, a reddit user did. The article says as much in the second paragraph.

  2. I don’t understand whats so confusing about the Watch OS interface. I’ve just watched videos, and I already feel like I have a fairly intuitive understanding of the UI navigation. Its just new and different, an interaction pattern we’ve never used before. People act like the iPhone was entirely obvious when it first came out in 2007. It wasn’t, you had to play around and discover things when you first touched it. Pinch to zoom wasn’t an obvious gesture unless you KNEW you could do that. Despite being a heavily promoted feature, not everyone knew at first. Auto orientation detection, another thing that is something you stumbled on while playing around with the system, there was no obvious indicator you could rotate and automatically see a new view, unless you saw the marketing material or saw someone else do it.

Intuitive to me doesn’t strictly mean its entirely obvious at first glance how to operate. It means its straight forward to learn and frictionless to operate once you discover the basics, and is designed in a way to help encourage discovery. Everything I’ve seen of the Watch interface feels very much in line with this and previous new Apple interfaces. It still has all the attention to detail and delightfully playful touches sprinkled throughout the entire system that I love about Apple’s systems.
