Oh Samsung

Samsung talking about Apple releasing the Apple Watch:

“It’s with great delight that Apple has followed us into that market.”

It’s like that company doesn’t know when to shut the hell up.

  1. I seem to remember that Samsung was making Galaxy Gear because a certain company was rumored to make some kind of smartwatch. The follow up to the accidental watch that was a music player.

  2. “…so that we now know what we should have done with our Galaxy Gear watches in the first place, and can take steps to copy Apple as quickly as possible.”

  3. These clowns are hilarious.

“We’ve over 70 percent market share of the smart watch market in Europe and we can learn from those early iterations of our product,” he said.

Which translates to “We’ve sold 7 of the 10 smart watches purchased in Europe so far, and look forward to being the punchline of yet another series of jokes as we crater yet another product market. Just look at the arc of our massive profits in smartphones… no wait…”

  4. It’s due to the insecurity. Koreans are notoriously insecure because they spend their entire life being told what place they are in their class, school, and country in terms of grades. Kids are so insecure that a kid that always is first commits suicide when he/she only comes in second.

  5. Even if we took Samsung’s watch seriously, why would anyone take “great delight” in Apple entering their space? That’s usually a death sentence. The boast makes no sense, except as a childish neener-neener comment.

It’s clear their marketing department isn’t allowed to give any serious thought to marketing. They just fulfill orders from higher-ups, who are living out some kind of fantasy that has nothing to do with selling products.

  6. Yep. And the funny thing is, the progression of the Galaxy Gear line, literally followed exactly with the current “iWatch” rumors. The first Galaxy Gear was an embarrassing rushed product. Then the rumors about Apple and “health sensors” started to get traction, later on we get the next Gear all of a sudden with a heart rate monitor. Then after that the rumors were “curved display” and what do you know, they release the Gear S with a curved display.

Each product was obviously rushed, trying to pre-empt every new iWatch rumor.

This company has absolutely no shame. I don’t know how they can say shit like this and not feel completely soulless and shameful.

  7. When it basically was the only smart watch it was easy to rule the market. Same as what happened when the iPad had like 90% of the tablet market.

But then Android and Windows tablets started coming out and suddenly the iPad had only 50% of the tablet market. Not because they were selling less. But it’s a specious argument in a way. Folks tend to be OS loyal. So that 40% of folks that bought something other than an iPad were likely android users ‘for life’ and would have never bought an iPad anyway. And of course they would buy an android watch since the Apple Watch doesn’t work with Android. By the same token, all those iPhone users will get an Apple Watch not an Android watch. Flooding the market with more total watches and degrading Samsungs percent but not their sales.

  8. Because they have nothing really to worry about. Yes their percent of the total will go down. But they understand that that is due to an increase in the total, not necessarily a loss in sales.

Last year (for some example math) 1 million smart watches sold in Europe. Samsung was 70% of them. Or 700k. HTC etc were the rest

This year Apple releases and sells 1 million Apple Watches. Samsung etc have exactly the same sales as last year. Total watches sold is now 2 million giving Samsung 35% of the market. Which on the surface looks bad. But not really cause that 1 million Apple got would never buy an Android watch cause it’s no good to them. You have to consider how much of the Android market Samsung got over the total market.

Samsung gets this. Just as Apple has for years. Apple doesn’t care about selling Apple Watches to the 20 million (or whatever) smart phone uses in Europe. They care about the 10 million iPhone users.

  9. It is with great delight that Samsung announces that they are now number 2 in smartwatch sales.

Like in a weekend. When compared to their entire 2014-15 sales numbers. Even in Korea where it isn’t even available yet.

  10. “not necessarily a loss in sales.”

Did Samsung phone suffer lost in sale? How do you know they won’t with watch?

  11. You can’t look at a phone versus a Watch. The Apple Watch isn’t a phone competitor. You can’t use it unless you have an iPhone. Not an iOS device, but an iPhone.

Any loss Samsung had in the phone market was due to another phone. Be it an HTC or whatever other Android model, or a small percent of folks who only bought Android for the bigger screen and had little to no investment in the ecosystem.

  12. Yep. Apple has been working on the Apple Watch for 3+ years. Not like they decided to follow Samsung based on their extremely inspiring and successful range of wrist products. Either way, Apple Watch will probably outdo the lifetime sales of the entire market in the first week.
