Journey to the center of the earth

How far would you have to travel to reach the Earth’s core? And what would you see along the way? Discover what lies beneath…

The BBC did a great job with this.

  1. While I think this is cool, they dropped the ball on the scale. The scale of the vehicle and everything above ground is completely different than below ground. That tree would be about a foot tall. The guy in the crane would be tiny!

  2. How would making it more accurate make it less visually interesting? The accurate scale of the path down through the Earth is what makes it interesting. The fact that the vehicle isn’t also to scale makes it much less interesting.

  3. You seem to be demanding accuracy over visual metaphor. I’m pretty certain the design team considered making everything perfectly in scale and realized it might look less attractive for users who don’t share your literal-mindedness.

  4. I’m not the one demanding accuracy. For the record, I’m not demanding anything. I’m making an observation that for something they obviously took a lot of time on, it is odd that they missed something so obvious. Besides, they are the ones that chose to include a scale.

    SCALE 1 pixel : 0.002m

If you include a scale then everything should be to scale. If they were only going for the visual metaphor then you leave the scale out.

Are you telling me that it doesn’t look awfully weird to you that the vehicle is only 1/3 of the length to the first marker and the first marker is only a .7m deep rabbit warren? That just throws off the entire exercise.

  5. They got the formation of diamonds partially wrong. They start at about 1000 meters down, and go down as far as carbon exists. Some planets with lots of carbon can have diamond cores rather than iron like ours does. Still, well done.

  6. Not in the least. I appreciate what the BBC design team did with this piece, and I understand the difference between “literal” and “metaphor” as applied to infographics.

  7. As do I. Once you include a scale, that pretty much ties you in the literal camp.
