“Meerkatting”

Cameron Moll:

I don’t know what to expect of Meerkat’s viability, permanence, or lasting utility. But if the hype is any indication, they’re ripe for acquisition. They’re also ripe for lawsuits and traditional media backlash, e.g. live-broadcasting televised events.

I feel like we are all in the same boat as Cameron with respect to Meerkat. We’re all fascinated, but we don’t know where it’s going yet.

  1. It’s going to go the way of every other live video service that has come before it…lots of hype, lots of the technorati bloviating about it and then dead inside a year.

  2. I expect Twitter to just shut them out of the network any time now. I’m not sure that building something on top of someone else’s infrastructure is a good idea.

  3. They didn’t fully shut them out, just killed the automatic user discovery (I’m forgetting the correct name) service.

  4. Oh I see what you mean. Unsure if they can/should disallow Meerkat posts entirely. Twitter kind of has an obligation to be open on an ethical if not legal level and as long as Meerkat isn’t breaking terms of service…

  5. Meerkat’s in the annoying “Watch me as a get coffee” stage. We’ll see if it ever expands beyond that. Twitter did, perhaps Meerkat will. Or perhaps it will get scooped up by Facebook and die, er, add its uniqueness to the Borg…. er, become part of FB.
