ZDNet:
For years, Oracle has tormented Windows users by bundling adware with its Java installer for Windows PCs. Now Oracle has begun including the same adware as part of a default installation of Java for the Mac, using the same deceptive techniques.
More sleazy business practices for you and yours to be made aware of. Thanks to Rob Griffiths for the heads up.
Even more reason to not install it in the first place.
Considering that they make one metric ton of money out of Java based enterprise products and services, they should be ashamed of themselves.
Ah, come on dudes, Larry’s gotta fund his next new super yacht for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017 someway.
Major dick move. My kids hit the “ok” on their iMac and I had to dig it all out. Same lame search and embedded link bullshit. Oracle must be proud.
Never Install Java.
Augh.
What a coincidence. I was upgrading a Mac today and one of the applications needs Java. I noticed a slimy looking ad to install some piece of crap and quickly dismissed it but thought to myself, I wonder how many people would click on the download button that was shown, unknowingly? Then I wondered, when did this start? Huh. That’s too bad. I guess we all knew the day would come where the Mac user base would be big enough to attract this BS.
Luckily I’ve been working with PC’s and Macs long enough to know to lock down a computer so that only I and other IT admins can modify the system but still….
It’s really too bad that Ask Jeeves went this way. I guess that’s what happens when you lose to Google? I would have hoped they would take the high road. How naive of me.
Moltz points out that Minecraft for Windows is now internalizing a clean version of JAVA. And Minecraft for Mac will soon do the same. http://verynicewebsite.net/2015/03/our-long-overworld-nightmare-is-over-almost/
Now, no one needs JAVA.
Dig a hole & bury it. Toss in Flash and Adobe PDF Acrobat/Reader, too. Put them in face down, just in case. And salt the earth you cover them with.
But wait, there’s more!
Not only is Oracle installing adware along with Java, it’s doing so very insecurely. Watch as guy easily hacks the Java installer to install arbitrary package completely successfully, http://www.brunerd.com/blog/2015/03/06/java-8-update-40-installer-app-fun/
I remember Ask Jeeves fondly. Ask.com results still turn up in search results, but the above is definitely not how I’d want to remember them.
You have to kill them three times before they’re fully dead, you know.
Since it’s being installed like this, Apple needs to add Ask to the malware list.
