Mix your Apple Watch

This is a cleverly designed site that allows you to mix and match various Apple Watch bodies with different straps. Fun few minutes diversion. What’s your favourite look?

  1. This is actually pretty dumb, since it allows combinations that are not available in the SKU grid. Will you be able to eventually buy replacement bracelets of any description to connect in to your existing Watch? Of course. But for now, this web tool would only be useful if it limited the choices to the ones that will actually be available to purchase. The complete SKU grid is here if you care to look:

ALL of the combinations* available to purchase** are already shown on the Apple web site – you can look at them just fine there. This tool just makes people think they can get stuff that won’t be offered for original purchase.

*The reason for the limited combos would probably come down to Apple not wanting loser-ish looks hitting the street in the initial rush.

**It’s probably safe to assume that one more set of SKUs – Edition Watches with full gold bracelets – will be added to the list come launch day.

  2. You guys know that the combinations are limited to the ones that apple shows on the web site, right? You can’t get mix-n-match setups that will look like crap.

  3. I’m thinking/hoping bands are available separately and work across the 3 different models (no reason why this wouldn’t work). The silver Sport & blue lumpy leather strap look great together in this mock up. Black sport doesn’t seem to work with much.

Not selling bands separate will be a really dumb move as within days cheap unofficial bands (some copies, some original designs) will flood the market anyway. Im sure Apple would prefer that money goes in their pocket far more than the desire to restrict tastes to the styles recommended by Apples advertised SKU’s. Individuality & customisability is key for Apple Watch. I’m surprised people don’t think this is the way Apple will play it.

  4. What are you talking about? They are available for purchase! All you have to do is buy all 3 models and then mix and match!

  5. We already know that all 38mm bracelets will fit all 38mm cases, and all 42mm bracelets will fit all 42mm cases. That’s a stated fact. And yes, eventually Apple will offer replacement and additional bracelets as separate SKUs – probably in the fall in time for the holiday sales season.

But I doubt Apple will EVER offer “a la carte” cases, for two reasons:

1 – Keeping a moderately small number of SKUs available makes it far easier to manage your supply and production chain. You can make sure that most (if not all) items are in stock, without the spectre of ending up with thousands of unsold bracelets of one or two styles that end up inexplicably unpopular.

2 – These watches HAVE to look amazing. Apple is looking to disrupt on two fronts here: They want to turn the luxury watch market on its ear by offering new and never-before-available features at a traditional price, and they want to blow up the “smart watch” market buy offering something that doesn’t look like complete shit (cough cough Galaxy Gear cough) on your wrist. Keeping the majority of the watches looking awesome and not like something from a junk store because of a garish case/bracelet mismatch is going to be key for entrenching the product as a much-wanted and lusted-after device.

Those SKUs will be the only ones available to start. Period. Let’s come back in October and see where we are 🙂

  6. Yes you can. I can totally mix a Rose Gold with a yellow Fleuro band. But on Apple’s sight the only bands listed are white and black. Yellow isn’t an option for that case.

  7. You owe me £20. Bands available separately day 1 and i could mix and match to any terrible combination I choose.

I’m gonna go gold and red bracelet on a silver sport. Classy.

  8. Actually, no. One, I don’t recall ever agreeing on 20 quid, and two, in the hands-on area today they specifically told us (and I quote):

“Not all bands will be available for purchase separately, as some come only with new Watch purchases.”

In other words, the only bands available separately are ones that are already offered for multiple cases. And more to the point in this case, the “Edition” bands are “unique” to the Edition model and are not sold separately – thus their conspicuous absence from the accessories page.
