  1. I know these people who mock Kanye today. I recognise them from back when I was a teenager, when the only thing I was sure of was that Nirvana was the greatest thing to ever happen to music – these were the same people mocking Cobain when he was at both the peak of his powers and the depth of his tragedy. They scoffed at the way in which his music was ripped raw and bloody straight out of his life. They laughed along with sneering tabloid stories written by people even less imaginative than they. Remember those stories? What was Cobain if not a whiny self-indulgent loser! And the scoffers are back now, doing the same thing with Kanye, except they have different faces – and ironically many would claim to be serious Nirvana fans. Right now, if they’re reading this they’ll be thinking ‘are you shitting me? No way this guy is even in the same league as Cobain! Plus he’s always bragging and showing off etc etc etc’. They’ll never get it. Kanye takes the hip hop aesthetic to an extreme at the intersection between the warping power of superstardom and a personal life indistinguishable from his lyrics. Cobain did the same thing. This is something the old at heart will never understand. Oh, and while they may be serious Nirvana fans, they never really got Nirvana either. They’re the ones who like all the pretty songs, and they like to sing along, but they don’t know what it means.

  2. His wikipedia page is longer than those of his critics, with a few glaring lines that depict a lack of tact. No one should go so far as to call him a loser; he is still young. Many a time has a new family will mature artist: Look at all the comedians that made family-friendly works once they had children; all the musicians that cleaned up their acts when they found a spouse (not a houchie mamma or playboy-wannabe) that loved them. Kanye irks me at times but give him time. He evolves the culture whether the losers give him credit or not.

  3. He’s not a loser because of his successful recording career. He’s a loser because he doesn’t care about where braggadocio trash talk turns into being a careless asshole. And nobody in his no-doubt extensive entourage will ever be likely to want to moderate that.
