The Nest Protect in frightening action

I can’t comment on the Nest Protect smoke alarm. I don’t own one, have never had to set one up or disable one. But this video feels like the opening of a science fiction movie on the order of Alien or Terminator.

Fear the future, SkyNet is here!

  1. Before I bought my Nest Protects about 6 months ago, I had just attempted to replace my old (10 years) traditional networked/wired smoke alarms with the equivalent model – and had all kinds of strange problems.

I read many complaints on the Protects online, and virtually nothing supporting them. Nevertheless, it was hard to imagine they wouldn’t eventually get it right, and I wanted to try them out.

So I replaced all 7 of my detectors with Protects… And have had no problems as of yet (again, 6 months). Fingers crossed. I love them.

And yes… just running the self test on the system (pressing self test on one alarm gets them all talking and alarming and blinking, slightly out of sync) truly does seem like something out of scifi.

  2. I’ve had my Nest Protect for about 6 months without any issues.

My Nest thermostat, on the other hand, seems to hate my older AirPort Express base station (known issue).

  3. A confusing video to be sure. All I get from it is that the guy is very, very, very rich, and incredibly, paralyzingly, stupid.

Anyone care to comment on what the actual problem was? Did he ever think to enter the master bedroom in the end?

  4. There have been a lot of complaints in the past at least about false positives with these alarms, so I’m assuming that was the issue.

I’m pretty sure one of those alarms he collected and put in the cooler was the master bedroom alarm.

And to silence them for real as with other alarms, you need to both disconnect them from the wired power and remove the backup batteries. Unfortunately in these alarms, removing the backup batteries also requires a screwdriver.

I wonder, had he fully disconnected the master bedroom alarm from power, would the other alarms would have shut up? Should they?

  5. The hardwired ones also have rechargeable batteries inside. I know from experience at 2AM that you can unscrew the lid and remove them to quiet the alarm.

  6. I’ve had a nest thermostat for 1+ years. Works great. Got ONE protect to try it out. Worked fine (AFAIK) for 4 months or so and then refused to connect to the network. The same network it had be connected to the entire time. Tried troubleshooting n-diffrent ways. Called support, etc. At this point even if they offered to replace it I wouldn’t bother putting it back up.

The thermostat is one thing… Smoke/CO alarms need to be bullet proof.

  7. This {false} alarm cannot be silenced because it is a smoke emergency alarm that cannot be silenced by law… see Nest Official statement below.

Our Support team is reaching out to Brad to assist him with getting this
resolved. In Brad’s situation, there was an unexplained alarm that
falsely read as an emergency level of smoke. When Nest Protect detects
an emergency level of smoke, by regulation it can’t be silenced. You can
read more about it here: https://nest.com/support/article/What-types-of-alarms-can-I-silence

    If
there is an unexplained alarm that can’t be hushed, disconnect the unit
from power (if it’s the wired model), remove the batteries using a
    screwdriver, and contact Nest Support.

  8. So at what point do the alarms turn off? Or do they keep going forever? Obviously they don’t turn off when the smoke is gone, because there was no smoke.

And you expect him to resolve it, and you’ll merely assist him?

If it had been my house I’d have smashed them all with a hammer and sent you back the pieces.

  9. It’s a known problem if you’ve got more than one WiFi AP with the sam e SSID the interlink between the Nest’s gets confused. I had the same problem. Renamed one of my APs to a different SSID. Problem solved. Nest know about this and are working on a patch.
