On February 15, 1965, our national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. Canada was just two years away from centennial celebrations when the maple leaf flag was made official by Royal Proclamation. In 1996, February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day and has been observed every year since.
February 15, 2015, will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. This special Flag Day is the perfect opportunity to learn more about how our flag was created and what it means to us.

I can think of two very controversial items from Canada’s history. First was the new flag and second was Health Care. Today you couldn’t get most Canadians to part with either.
When you look at the options, the flag Canada picked really stands out as the best of them. I’m quite happy with it; simple yet iconic.
I agree that it’s a gorgeous flag recognizable all over the world. I travel a lot and I find non-Canadians love it too.

Yes, I’m sure that will stand the test of time like the other two examples. I was a school kid during the flag and health care debates and both were vigorously opposed by the conservatives of the day.
Today’s old conservatives may have a problem with Bill C-38 but they love their health care and love the flag. Funny what time does.
I think the C-38 controversy isn’t going to last as long, because no major party is fanning the controversy.
I think it’s long past controversy and in recent polls close to 70% of the country is in favor. After a decade it is now entrenched. Occasionally democracy works well.
Bill C-38 has never been a big controversy outside of specific pockets. Of course some people don’t like it. But it has had majority support from day 1, and not at all a major controversy, which is a testament to the country that Canada is.
Yup. It has a very slim chance of coming back into the limelight at all. I’d bet it continues to be non-issue.
