If I die on Mars: meet the people on a mission to be first on the red planet … and stay there

The Guardian:

Three volunteers are on the shortlist to be among four people on the Mars One programme, the first manned space flight to Mars – a one-way trip that’s effectively a suicide mission. Why do they want to leave Earth, and who are they leaving behind? As the list of potential Mars explorers is whittled down further on 16 February, meet those competing to be the first to land on the Red Planet.

I’d go.

  1. I hope you’d photograph it as well, Shawn.

Oh but worse than that would be the 8 minute delay between you talking and Jim responding…

  2. “a one-way trip that’s effectively a suicide mission”
I don’t see it as that at all. It’s exciting. You’d be alive and living much of your life in space on the way. Then when you get to Mars, hopefully you’d be setting up some environmental area to live in and study from. Living with more risk of course, but hopefully living and exploring. I can think of nothing more exciting.

  3. It also is a bit hyperbolic to say that they will never return to Earth. We don’t know what advances in space technology will be discovered in the next 30+ years. Someone may develop a craft capable of going to Mars and bringing them home.

Still, if I didn’t have a family, I’d go in an instant. But you better believe I’d need an e-reader loaded up with all the books I’d ever want to read.
