The device will communicate via a form of technology known as NFC and won’t have to be charged, Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek said in an interview. The Swatch smartwatch will also let consumers make mobile payments and work with Windows and Android software, he said.

The “not being charged” bit has been misinterpreted by several outlets. What I believe he meant by that was, they intend to offer 3G connection for free, aka not getting charged for 3G access. Similar to Kindles. Not that you could get on the internet without needing an electrical charge, lol. If it sounds impossible, it is.

Prediction: The “not having to be charged” is going to end up relating to how often you charge the battery. Of course it will still have to be charged, just not having to be charged daily or some such.

Thats just a nearly content free article. It has no details, not even of the functions the watch will have and the reporter didn’t even pursue the no charge issue. I mean, that’s got to be a ‘wait, what’ moment…. how can a wearable do much that’s useful if you don’t charge the battery? If the reply is that it trickle charges based on motion that implies the battery isn’t being drained heavily… which implies a lot for the feature set.
They could have a better version of the self winding watch technology. How low power can wireless be these days?
I was thinking the same thing. Every time someone says they are going to release a X killer it fails to be anything close.
Unlike Apple who focuses on making the best whatever, according to their notions of what that means.
I suspect as much.
That said, I hope that Apple is working on alternative charging tricks for the Apple Watch. The whole ‘up to’ trick may prove not to be enough for many cause they will use the watch a lot. I don’t know if the answer is some kind of solar chip or a kinetic charger or what. That’s for them to figure out
