The whole Tsukiji experience is comparable to strolling through the fish section of Whole Foods early one morning when the LSD kicks in and the store suddenly turns into JFK Airport and a monster bike rally is starting and a marathon walk is ending and all the cars have Jersey plates and valet service is provided by Hell’s Angels. You are the outsider at the fish anarchist’s ball.
One of my Bucket List items was/is to visit this market. Looks like I’ll have to hurry.
Perhaps, they should try mass electroshock therapy to ween the Japanese off their compulsive dependence of this particular tuna. That’s about as absurd as the Japanese unable or unwilling to control themselves by fishing responsibly, so why not?
For the rest of us humans, we’ll get to witness what happens when the masses tip the balance of nature to catastrophic consequences. This is a case study for what will inevitably come to pass as we multiply from the 7.3 billion people to 9 billion people (scientists predict that earth is incapable of sustaining more than 9 billion people at our current standard of living). Mass extinction is already underway for countless species and there is no plan or consensus to manage what remains responsibly. I expect within the next 50 years, the Japanese will be primarily living off of only chicken, rice, and processed foods made from a combination of those ingredients.
Sea life will be either extinct or too toxic to eat and pork or beef will be too expensive to sustain for their economy. For the rest of us, it’s just a matter of time before we follow suit. Dystopia, here we come, like it or not.
Luckily I was able to see so smaller one at Naha Okinawa. The only surprise was a shark that was for sale and they were cutting pieces off it. People were bidding on the shark tale like an auction.
