iTunes features that have been retired

Kirk McElhearn walks us through some iTunes features that have since been retired. My favorite:

Ah, Ping, we hardly remember you. This “social network for music” was one of Apple’s biggest failures with iTunes. It was added in September, 2010, to iTunes 10, and was pretty much universally derided.

  1. iTunes can now be noted for the things that it has taken away rather than the things that it brings to ethe table.

  2. I miss iTunes DJ… Being that most of my friends are music nerds, it was always a blast when my friends would come over and we ALL choose what the soundtrack of the night would be.

  3. iTunes is the worst software Apple makes. I use Logic every day and it’s an absolutely amazing program that has gotten better every release. But I launch iTunes and I don’t even know what the hell I’m looking at any more. It’s awful and everyone jokes about it. My guess is that Apple’s working on something better but is keeping it under wraps. In the meantime, we suffer.

  4. I never even knew you could open mutliple iTunes windows, back when you evidently could.

(I personally don’t understand why anyone ever wanted or liked Cover Flow, but plainly people did.

As they said over there, perhaps it’s a matter of library size – at over 300 gigs, the last thing I care about is zipping over album art.)

  5. One of his predictions for things that might be dropped in the future is iTunes Match. iTunes without iTunes Match is a horrible, horrible thought. How else will I fit 10,000 songs on a 16GB iPhone? Hell, I don’t even want them on my MacBook Air!

  6. Mine keeps locking up when I try to quit it. Not every time, but maybe once a week. Oh well. Fingers crossed…

  7. You could only sort of do so. It only worked for playlist windows, and was pretty limited. iTunes Store always ran in the main window; you couldn’t open another window (or tab, no tabs) for a link.

iTunes Store may have started out based on different technology, but now it’s just the world’s worst web browser.

  8. Have you not spent much time with iPhoto, Mail or Notes? 🙂

I agree re Logic. I kept trying to find showstopper bugs in X, but they weren’t there. With the major UI overhaul it just received, that’s pretty amazing. They must have a separate QA team.
