To be clear, I don’t think that people who work for Facebook are evil. Instead they are part of a corporate machine whose job is to control all of our attention, for as long as possible. On the other hand, Facebook having empathy would mean a wholesale cultural graft towards a different way of thinking, developing and interacting with people.
Great read here from Om Malik.
War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, and empathy is indifference.
Yes, a great read, indeed, because it demonstrates the stench of hypocrisy that is so often found in commentary by the rich elites in the tech industry, especially those, such as Malik, who have built their august social media profiles via Facebook and Twitter. Even as he gently denounces Facebook for its lack of empathy and argues that its algorithms need to be more “humane,” Malik remains a card-carrying member of the Zuckerberg Empire. He has a link to his Facebook page on his own blog! But, I guess, as they say, “You do what you gotta do.” If he really believed what he actually wrote in this piece, he would make an exit from Facebook.
