National Geographic:
More than 9,200 entries were submitted from over 150 countries, with professional photographers and amateur photo enthusiasts across the globe participating.
The Grand Prize Winner will receive $10,000 and a trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in the annual National Geographic Photography Seminar in January 2015.

Meh
Pretty nice set of photos for amateurs. The Grand Prize winner is not so atypical of a photo that might land on the pages of National Geographic. Often when you shoot in available light, there can be such an odd set of colors. Back in the days of film, National Geographic photographers often would push Kodachrome 200 film to ISO 500, and that would cause a color shift, sometimes pretty significant in such settings.
Most of the time, the photography at the Geographic is documentary, which means devoid of any significant manipulation beyond adjusting for the differences between what our eyes see and what cameras can reproduce. But there are times when a more illustrative approach has been used. I’m not all that enamored of affected photos such as the winner, but we have to remember, this is a photo contents, not documentary photography.
I think there is no such thing as a bad photo so congratulations to the winners!
I thought the same thing. The “meh” comment was about the winner. But I think many, almost all, of the other runner up photos were at least as good if not better.
With all due respect, only those who do not follow Nat Geo would think this is not typical.
