Tough times for the Gray Lady, along with the rest of the newspaper industry. I hate to see this happen. Not sure there’s a short term business case to be made for a buyout. Jeff Bezos saved the Washington Post. Is there a hero out there for the New York Times?
New York Times faces layoffs if buyout offer falls short
What? I thought the NYT just used bloggers starting a couple of years ago. This explains their anti-Apple Champain for page hits.
I’m sure it’s nothing that a few more attack articles on Apple won’t fix.
Sorry I’ve no tear to shed…
The NYT, like nearly all news outlets, is outright crap. There’s no content; there’s no relevance; there’s no analysis. There’s little if anything of value in there. The same holds for the Washington Post.
Both are basically trolling for page views in a desperate attempt to grab eyeballs and make advertisement dollars.
They missed the internet boat. In the past, their readers would purchase this or that paper rather than another because, in essence, their parents or their peers did. Nothing else. Come internet, and hell breaks loose: you get the news for free, and you can even be picky on the topics that interest you.
Two models will probably survive in such an environment imo. One is crap like Business Insider, which makes no effort to even look accurate or relevant, and takes trolling to new heights. The other is curation or analysis by cherry picked authors — in which case the audience basically picks the author or editor it wants to read. The first earns money primarily through ads; the second primarily through sponsorship and affiliation.
