Samsung copies Apple yet again

Samsung this week announced its answer to Apple’s Continuity: a new cross-device sharing feature called “Flow,” intended to allow users to move activities and content between Samsung smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, PCs, and more.

I’m shocked that Samsung would so blatantly copy Apple. SHOCKED!

  1. At first I was thinking, “okay, that’s a bit much. A feature like this takes a long time to develop, so they must have had it in the works for ages.” And then I saw that there’s no release date. So, yeah, people are justified in giving them a hard time.

  2. Inevitable? 🙂

I think this is one time they outdid Apple though. From the video, which could be all demo ware, it looks more like multi-tasking vs “single-tasking” with Continuity.

Apple: “typing an email, continue on Mac”
Samsung: “on PC, pull up a list of Flows”

They watch flow though shows how behind that is from a Wear watch. With Wear you just start the route and turn your wrist.

Either way, this is something you should expect and want. The competition will force Apple to not get complacent, just like at iOS 7 and 8.

    Edit:
I do think they should use NFC though too. That extra step of tapping a button feels so unnecessary.

  3. That makes no sense. You even acknowledge that it’s demo ware, yet they “outdid” Apple. Seriously?

Have you used Continuity? I love it, although audio quality for calls is not so good. I’m sure that will improve.

  4. Yes, I’ve used it but not for calls. I’m only referring to the “sharing” of current app stuff. Apple is singular, Flow looks to allow multiple.

I said it could be demo ware, not that it is. All of this could be working just fine but until they release it is nothing but a video. That’s not a bad thing, iOS features are demo ware post-wwdc sometimes.

  5. they outdid Apple

here you are declaring their implementation is better than apple’s, despite never having used it before because it doesn’t even fucking exist yet. yyyyyeaaahhh….. thanks for making clear you’re a blatant troll on this site.

  6. until its released, until you’ve used it, its just vaporware. only an insane person would try to compare a real thing with a video of a thing.

  7. Sure, one could make the vapor argument but we discuss Apple stuff early ALL the time around here and compare it to current stuff (iOS 8 to Android before release, Yosemite to Windows 8 before release, etc, etc, etc). That’s what discussion forums or comments are for: to discuss the topic posted by the author.

Based on your definition of an insane person, everyone commenting on it here is insane including Jim.

  8. I’m not as aghast at the notion of Samsung copying this idea and I don’t think Apple is either. I see it, and suspect they do, as a natural progression. If you want to take the computer out as the center of the digital lifestyle you need to equalize the other components. And why do this to remove the computer if you are going to stick the phone or tablet in its place.

And there is another factor. Remember when the iPad came out and it was like 97% of the market cause there was basically nothing else. Apple couldn’t really claim it was the best because of that lack. When more came out and they weren’t as popular, Apple could make their claims. Same now with saying “continuity” is the best scheme. Or even saying the same about Apple Pay. You need choices to have something be “the best” so bring it on Samsung, Microsoft, Google etc

  9. John is right. IF they can pull it off it does look like it could prove to be a better system for some users. Because it is in keeping with Androids general notions of multi window views etc

The catch is the big IF

  10. HUGE if for sure. Sammy is pretty solid on software to a point. They always seem to miss that extra polish and definitely have zero restraint, which are two areas Apple highly excels.

  11. Interesting perspective. Best of a 1 entrant category vs best of a flooded one. I can actually get behind that. I always like competition in a category, makes for pressure to build better stuff.
