AppleInsider:
Mac and iOS users are protected from viruses and malware by default unless the user bypasses their security systems, by jailbreaking an iOS device; by disabling the protections of Mac OS X’s GateKeeper; or by choosing to “Trust” app installs that iOS identifies as being from an “Untrusted App Developer.” Here’s how those systems work, and how users can avoid being tricked into turning off their own security.
Short version? Don’t be stupid.
It’s “stupid” to disable GateKeeper? There’s a lot of good software out there, which isn’t signed by the overlords at Apple. They’ve restricted Mac App store apps so much, devs are taking off out of the store.
I don’t think saying people are stupid for wanting to run software not on the MAS is even remotely correct. You just need to be careful.
Point out where I said, “It’s “stupid” to disable GateKeeper”.
Please don’t assume.
It’s easy enough to leave it enabled by default and then turn it off for discreet installs if YOU have confidence in the software/developer.
Unlike iOS, you can have a signed Mac app, without selling it through the Mac App Store (and hence not subject to its restrictions)/
Your comment was, “Don’t be stupid” directly after an excerpt talking about disabling gatekeeper.
What else was I to assume? Maybe your explanation needed to be longer if you wanted your interpretation to be taken the right way?
Yeah, but what if a developer doesn’t want to do that? I’m not arguing that apple shouldn’t enable this by default. I’m more arguing that there are reasons to have it disabled. That doesn’t mean I’d recommend my mom do that.
I do this all the time. In Yosemite you don’t even need to turn it off, it has a button that allows you to install while keeping it on.
dude, you didn’t just call your mother stupid, did you?
Don’t mind Shawn. It’s not his fault he can’t get his point across (whatever it was) in a coherent way.
If you asked her to rate herself on tech stuff, that would probably be her reply. My point is for some people it’s a small risk, for others it could be driving without a seat belt.
The dude never wears a seatbelt. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iApz08Bh53w
