Office goes free on phones and tablets: What you get, and what you don’t

Macworld:

With the news that Microsoft is making all of its mobile Office apps free—the iPad and upcoming Android tablet versions—you knew there had to be some caveats.

I’m glad I don’t have to use Office any more but for those of you who do, my sympathies and this article will help you figure out this news.

  1. PowerPoint lacking Presentation mode is just the worst. Makes the app useless (without subscription).

Fascinating to see if their model works, though.

  2. I loath Microsoft Office. I am so glad that I can get buy with an old version for the occasional time were I must open a file.

  3. They must be really struggling to sell those Office 365 subscriptions if they are doing this. The list of which features are premium is quite confusing and that must have been a pain in the butt to implement.

  4. I still use Office—mostly Word—but I can’t foresee a need for having these apps on my iPad. Spreadsheets I create for myself are in Numbers. I’ve rarely worked in Keynote, and only occasionally edit PowerPoint decks. When I need an app to write something substantial, I prefer Bean on Mac and WriteRoom in iOS.
