Yahoo:
Apple today announced financial results for its fiscal 2014 fourth quarter ended September 27, 2014. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $42.1 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.5 billion, or $1.42 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $37.5 billion and net profit of $7.5 billion, or $1.18 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 38 percent compared to 37 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
More profit, more revenue, more sales. So – DOOMED!
iPad sales are down year over year again. That’s not good. The iPad doesn’t need a faster processor or even a price cut. It’s in some desperate need of apps that completely differentiate from the iPhone and MacBook Air. Development of first class, from the ground up iPad apps has all but disappeared. Where is another Flipboard or Paper? With the 6 Plus, it’s only going to get worse unless people have a really compelling reason to buy an iPad.
RE: Ipad down…not good.
Why is that not “good”? Is this product line in the red? was this line supposed to be like the iphone? were the new gen models sold prior to Q end? Has iPad really been the story?
iPod is down…must be bad.
What was the iPod “hired” to do? the iPad? the iPhone? What’s wrong if the 6Plus disrupts the iPad mini?
so doomed. so wrong.
People may update their iPads to do retain functionality they’re getting on their newest iPhones. E.g. have the home button do something when you tap it.
Do I really have to explain to you why falling sales of a relatively new product category, one that was hailed as groundbreaking and world changing (and remains my favorite device by far), is “not good”, or are you simply being obtuse on purpose? Where does “not good” translate to “Apple is doomed?”
Sales of the iPad have been falling for 2 years now. The iPhone 6 Plus has been out for a month or so. I don’t think you can chalk this up to “disruption” of the iPad mini. App development for the iPad has languished as developers have put it on the back burner. Don’t take my word for it, talk to developers. This MUST change.
I find it fascinating that the fastest growing (by units) is the Mac..
Are Macs cannibalizing iPad sales?
you need to explain to yourself why you seem to think the iPad growth should follow a straight line and therefore, any zig and zag along the way isn’t “good”.
failure to understand that is being obtuse.
Zig-zags are fine, that’s expected quarter to quarter. You see zig-zags with the iPhone. However, what you don’t want to see, especially with a relatively young product, is a “hump” shape on the sales curve. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we now see with the iPad, versus the iPhone, which, despite a lot of zig-zagging, continually trends upward.
If you think all is well with the iPad, you’re entitled to your opinion. I can promise you, despite what they may say, Apple is not happy with the iPad sales trend.

Yeah, I think very likely it’s being squeezed on both sides now, by the iPhone and the MacBook Air/Pro. When Steve introduced the iPad, he said it had to have a very definite reason to exist, it had to what it did far better than either the iPhone or MacBook could do the same task. I’m not sure that’s the case anymore as the iPhone has gotten bigger and better, and the MacBook has gotten smaller and faster. Perhaps your memory is better than mine, but I can’t recall when the last “killer” app was released for the iPad (not just an optimized version of an iPhone app). Something along the lines of Paper, the kind of app you buy a device just to run.
let’s keep it simple.
is the iPad…an iPhone?
Everyone I know who has an iPad loves it. If there’s a hump, maybe it’s because we’re happy with the iPads we have and don’t need to replace it every year? Kudos to Apple for creating hardware that doesn’t fail after a year or two, unlike my Nexus 7 tablet bought around the same time that has become a paperweight.
Seriously. It’s a high-quality PC replacement that actually doesn’t need to be replaced every year.
Apple is doomed.
Everybody that can have an iPad, has one at this point. iPads, just like a Mac, are not replaced every year. I just upgraded mine this summer. I am not going to sell mine to buy the new one for Touch ID and the new processor. It does what I need it to do, very effectively. I had an iPad 2, and was quite happy with it, but I got an offer to buy it from me that was very generous, so I decided to upgrade it. With out this offer, I would not have purchased my iPad Air this past summer.
“Apple’s long-term success is now officially no longer dependent upon sales of a product that didn’t exist five years ago, but which I have decided is absolutely essential for the trend I’ve extrapolated! I need some new first-class apps, stat!!”
