Apple today announced that OS X Yosemite, the latest major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, is available as a free upgrade for Mac users from the Mac App Store.
I’ve been using Yosemite for a while now and I really like all of the changes, especially the redesigned interface.
Still waiting for it to appear in the App Store… anybody else had luck getting it yet?
Not yet
Not here in the UK it’s not, so far …
Is it stable?
The Siracusa review is up. Settling in for a good read.

Not in Canada, eh? Pity.
Check out Jim Lindley’s post if you have a usr/local directory full of things. Like me. 😉

Stable, yes.
In need of some more polish, yes.
And, as usual, some software that hooks more deeply into the system may require an update (paid or free) to be compatible.
Helvetica Neue for the entire UI? No way that works better than a typeface chosen for genuine legibility over style.
Not only that but Apple should design and use their own font. Using any traditional and fairly popularly used font is and has been a bad idea for design and prepress services or anyone who needs to control all the fonts.

Only if your production artist somehow neglects to include the fonts actually being used along with a job being sent to a vendor. A preponderance of Helveticas causing font conflicts on your computer has little to do with the legibility of an operating system’s UI.
Traditional, popular, or otherwise, there are plenty of excellent fonts out there without tasking Apple to come up with something that turns out to be another “Roboto.” I’m fairly certain Erik Spiekermann or Adrian Frutiger (to name only two examples) could be of enormous help were Apple to consider consulting someone on the issue.
Yes and no. Many people don’t know which fonts they can safely move out of the fonts folder(s) and additionally many people don’t know that some are “self healing”. If Apple would simply use their own in house created fonts instead there would be no need to figure any of this out. And as you mentioned, I don’t mean that Apple would have to design this font in house, they certainly could and should use consultants.

It’s actually the reverse problem I am referring to. A problem with reflow etc. on the printing side. Not that most good production facilities have that problem, but the fact that it is a problem at all is what bothers me.
I still think you’re conflating two marginally-related issues. And anyone who doesn’t know how to package a layout to include fonts (or export a decent pdf with everything embedded) probably shouldn’t be prepping anything for professional printing anyway.
Actually I am not. My original point probably wasn’t that well phrased. I want Apple to use there own designed font not foe UI reasons but for font conflict problems.
Even if a client knows how to package a file properly if they included Helvetica Neue as say a PS font but the OTF system font is being used.. well you know the rest.
In other words, I want Apple to have their own system font separate from anything else.
I understand things are not at all as focused as they were in the pre OS X days towards print facilities and designers though, so I am not holding my breath either.
