Your iPhone is now encrypted. The FBI says it’ll help kidnappers. Who do you believe?

The Guardian:

The US government and police officials are in the midst of a misleading PR offensive to try to scare Americans into believing encrypted cellphones are somehow a bad thing, rather than a huge victory for everyone’s privacy and security in a post-Snowden era.

I understand the government’s position but, with all the evidence of the authorities spying on us in any number of ways, they have no one to blame but themselves for average citizens looking for ways to protect themselves from their government.

  1. believe neither.

All this is doing is make it harder for them to do
parallel construction because they couldn’t use NSA data in a court of law
so they were going to Apple with secret warrant to get the info.

Don’t worry Congress will amend to have loop holes.
Even China was pressuring Apple either to have no backdoor or have it.

Now they can’t. so they are crying about children and some such.

  2. This is what happens when people feel the trust has been broken. There was an outcry, and companies are responding.

  3. The security state does not like to relinquish the power we’ve given it during times of fear.

  4. Bite my crank, FBI. Go do some real investigative work, not these garbage parallel construction cases using phone taps under the guise of “won’t someone please think of the children.”

  5. Why bother trying to “understand the government’s position”. Far more honest and efficacious to simply say, “Fuck you, U.S government, fuck you very much!”

  6. seriously – how can people just naysay anything that AG Holder and the President put forward in their honest goal of keeping us safe. I can’t think of anything outside of rampant racism.

and for that person saying “FU government” – you do realize that the President and the Attorney General are both government officials who are black – could you be more racist?

  7. “I can’t think of anything outside of rampant racism.”

Seriously? You need to think harder then.

And saying “FU government” is not even a little bit racist. You may need to go look up the meaning of the word because you’re not using it correctly.

  8. The government can do exactly what businesses and people everywhere have been doing since the beginning of time when confronted with a difficult problem: figure it out.
Governments are so used to force the rest of us to solve their problems by legislating all sorts of burdens on us that their problem solving abilities have atrophied all the way down to the level of a spoiled brat.
Hire smarter people that can figure out how to fight terrorism without mass surveillance.

  9. Is it any wonder why people don’t take cops seriously when they have such a bad understanding of the Constitution? Shoot, lump the judges in there when they say forcing us to decrypt info on our cellphones is not self-incrimination.

No, it’s you not understanding technology judge.

  10. The FBI says the Fifth Amendment will help kidnappers…obviously we should do away with it.

  11. I understand the government’s position. Tools that can eliminate dissent are way too valuable to give up.

  12. Don’t believe the government. Eric Holder’s remarks were cowardly and pathetic.

  13. A lot of people are mentioning Holder. Was it him? I know FBI Director James Comey said this and linked it to his ability to save kidnapped children. (He won Idiot of the Week on my new website for it.) On the state/city level I heard an officer from Chicago say something similar. Two people or even a few doesn’t quite make an offensive, I think.

I think the US Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations are going to outdo the government on this one since business won’t want international sales to drop (because of both customers not buying and government banning) due to insecure tech.
