Apple® today announced it has sold over 10 million new iPhone® 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, a new record, just three days after the launch on September 19. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK and will be available in more than 20 additional countries on September 26. The new iPhones will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.
“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
The release did not break down sales numbers between the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
Looks like Apple Pay is still targeted for October rollout. This was one of the footnotes in the release:
Apple Pay will be available to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus customers in the US as a free update to iOS 8 this October.
Does this imply that pre-orders not yet fulfilled aren’t counted in the totals? If so, I wonder what the total would have been if that supply had been on hand?
I’d assume that they count anything where payment has been taken, so only shipped orders would count. Could be wrong though.
I went to the Mall of America store on Saturday to have a look in person. There was a line of about 20 people waiting outside, with staff checking with them to go over availability of models. I asked the first few people on line what model they were getting, and all of them said the 6.
Personally I was ambivalent about them, having finally interacted with them. I’m not a huge fan of the design. I like the rounded edges but I prefer the design of the 5c: squared but with rounded corners. For some reason the light weight didn’t put me off like it did with the 5/5S. But the size didn’t feel right to me. From what I read that feeling goes away with use.
Definitely holding my 5c after holding the 6, it felt blocky and small by comparison. But when interacting with each alone I got different feelings. My 5c feels perfectly fine and the 6 felt big.
The camera bulge would drive me nuts.
Consider this, the 5S and 5C (starting price $199/$99 respectively) launch weekend was 9 million and launched in the following countries: US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK.

We’ve got higher starting prices and missing one (very big) country, China and yet more units sold. Most people are likely going to go for the mid-tier iPhone 6 since 16gb is ridiculous. So likely the REAL starting price is more like $299/$399.
I can’t wait to hear the earnings call this quarter.
the camera “bulge” issue is a complete non-starter, strictly an intellectual finding. i have it sitting naked flat on my desk — in normal use, it doesnt rock. the only spot where it will rock ever so slightly is the upper-left corner, but since that is now the hardest-to-reach spot, my app icons there are not often used. the “Back” arrow is about the only time, but due to the small ring size the rock is so slight, so minor, that spending any time worrying about it is completely pointless. further, if naked, one wouldnt use the “Back” arrow and would instead swipe in from the left edge. so again, non-starter.
further, like the masses who dont want to spend a couple hundred more on a repair, i use a case most of the time.
in short — the better camera and lighter/thinner body is 100% worth the intellectual-only problem of the ring.
I get hung up on things like the camera bulge, no matter how small. I’ve been lucky on the repair front: I haven’t had a case or a screen protector now for three years (two years with a 4S and one with a 5c) with no breakages. Though as a coworker said, not unfairly, a 5c is kind of like a 5 with a built-in case.
Seriously. And how many of those analyst clowns on the call will try to trick Luca into breaking out the sales figures?
