PayPal questions Apple Pay security

This reeks of worry and fear.

  1. It also ignores the fact that apple will be only storing your card info only on a secure chip on the phone, and not in the cloud like PayPal does.

So Apple will be making financial information more secure than selfies.

  2. Hey PayPal: you know that platform you used to extend your eBay dependent service to mobile devices? The one that let you develop an app that reached hundreds of millions of iOS devices owners around the world? What would happen if that suddenly became “unavailable?”

You might want to think about where you stand to lose more.

  3. Just to be clear, the card info isn’t stored on the device at all. The phone stores a unique device account number, which is established with the bank when you add the credit card. That device account number and a dynamic token is what is used when you make the purchase, not your credit card number.

  4. I seem to recall recently being informed by eBay that I had to change my password due to a compromise (company that owns PayPal). Way to be genuine with yourselves :/

PayPal stores your credit card information online, as well as tracks your purchasing history. Apple does neither. I wonder which is more secure?

The thing that irritates me the most about this, is that Apple Pay is a leapfrog forward in terms of security and privacy in the world of purchasing. And then companies who are scared about getting bulldozed do shit like this. Not caring about the public good this will do by preventing credit cards from being compromised, just caring only about their egos and self interests. Shameful.

  5. Agreed. There is no reason for the anyone between the consumer and the card issuer to see or store transactional data.

The fact that a consumer’s important financial information is typically stored purely for marketing purposes is disturbing.

  6. Reminds me a bit of the smear campaign some incumbent card-payment company tried to wage against Square a year or two ago.
