Separately, TechCrunch has heard from multiple sources that Square and Apple were recently in acquisition talks, but that Square walked away.
Nope.

Nope.
Nope what …Square walked away or that there were even talks?
an offer means talks.
What more do you want.
If there is no date then you can’t walk out on anyone.
ridiculous.
There could have been talks and Square walked away. The nope may mean Apple walked away instead of Square. Duh
Nope as in there were no talks.
So much for that clue-impaired rumor. Square was cool, but they are in trouble now. No way they would have walked away, and no way double that Apple would be interested in a system that light-weight. They are in it to take over.
Expecting Square to do that would be like expecting Forrest Gump to come up with a special theory of relativity.
“… Square and Apple were recently in acquisition talks …”
I think Apple’s initial Apple Pay strategy meeting must have gone about like this way back in 2011 or so:
“Dongle? No dongle? Yeah. No dongle.
So what’s for lunch?”
i wasn’t really buying this one given that Square has a totally different audience than Apple Pay.
lol in trouble now at 6B with so much cash…you are clueless little bitch arent you?
Nope = There were never any talks between Apple and Square. There was never an offer for Square from Apple. What part of “Nope” do you not understand?
You have to see that it’s ambiguous. The nope could be for the walking away part or for the talks. If it’s for the talks there’s no need to include the “walk away” part, hence the ambiguity.
I’m picturing a big “Nope” lever somewhere in Cupertino. A story comes up that Apple wants to say no to, but not directly, they pull the lever. I hope there’s a guitar riff sound effect that goes off at Jim’s house.
Knock off the name calling. It has no place here.
Guess you don’t read business news. We’re talking billions per day in transactions big. Recent reports are Square is looking to be bought out because potential growth for them is petering out.
BTW, are you 13 or what?
The Beard is like a Greek oracle. You never really understand what its saying until its too late.
Square is doomed. It has been fun to use the dongle for transactions at food trucks, yoga classes, etc, but it has always seemed like a kludge until an integrated payment system like Apple Pay came about.
You clearly don’t understand the difference between a VALUATION and a BANK ACCOUNT.
I think the Nope was referring to hamburgers vs. a double cheeseburger with onions, mustard and mushrooms.
I don’t know if apple pay replaces square. Aren’t they two different ideas?
Square is losing money. dur
exactly, Sharon. that James doesn’t seem the ambiguity raises questions of its own…
agreed, they serve two different use cases. food trucks and farmers market vendors aren’t about to install an NFC equipped POS terminal. that’s why they’re using Square.
and why do you assume you cannot do iOS to iOS device transactions with Apple Pay?
HAHAHA. Substitute noxious geologic fumes with Heineken and I think you may be on to something!
In a year from now Apple Pay will have functionality to not only pay but to also accept payments from another Apple Pay device. Once that feature goes live, the days of dongle will be numbered.
Most startups fail, like over 85%. Square has yet to make money but nicely filled a niche for a while. However, they failed to gain enough market share to be serious player now. I assume they will be acquired, perhaps for more than the $3B of this rumor but something far less than $6B. Unless they have some unannounced tech or partnership that does disrupt more than what they offer today.
Aaaand… the only reason anyone pays attention to Dalrymple. Without his sources at Apple telling him to say nope or yep, nobody would visit here.
Wow… Wake up Z… the issue with Square is they are tied to a single product. Their mag-stripe dongle was cool for a bit. I use it for my lawn care business and some people like it, but most are wary of it being some kind of skimmer. Others pay with Interac direct transfer, and others like a PayPal invoice. Most pay with cash (which I still use the Square register to track).
Mag-stripes are disappearing. Maybe not in the US as fast as elsewhere, but there are very few terminals in Canada that accept mag… they are almost all chip and/or NFC. If there were any talks at all, Square could have been in a position to move their POS system into the next step… NFC and other cardless transactions.
Square is in a zero growth market, making no money, and returning to venture capitalists for funding. Cash in the bank is only good to figure out how long before the burn rate brings them to zero. And, now Apple is in that space (along with PayPal, Amazon, and the upcoming Walmart initiative).
yes they are. Square is essentially a service for small scale merchants. The kind of folks that can’t afford the tens of thousands it would cost to set up their own account to take credit cards. Apple Pay is for the other side of the counter.
They may have to do something. Because in the US it is going to becomes practically mandatory to use NFC in the near future. But all that might mean is that Square moves their dongle and stands to NFC and perhaps a few changes in their software.
I think you meant “the only reason I pay attention to Dalrymple. Without his sources at Apple telling him to say nope or yep, I wouldn’t visit here”
In fact I”m certain that is what you meant. So say what you mean and stop acting like you are the voted opinion of everyone
Yeah why did they raise another 100M then? I dont think they are sitting around celebrating…they are pivoting.
I’d much rather invest in Square than Snapchat which is worth 10B and is just AIR.
Enjoy Snapchat at 10B then.
