Samsung’s Note 4 underwhelms

Mobile phone analysts said that, while packed full of hundreds of features and many of the latest hardware specs, there is little in the Note 4 to excite new users.

Jokes aside, this is a serious issue for Samsung, and one that couldn’t come at a better time for Apple. With disappointing sales of the Galaxy S5, the last thing Samsung needed was another failure, especially with Apple announcing new products next week. It certainly doesn’t sound like the Note 4 will be a blockbuster success.

  1. I have been no fan of Samsung for some time, but I have to admit that the Note Edge tickles my fancy a little bit. They showed off a nearly identical device called the YOUM at CES 2013 (though at that point it was mostly just a digital photo frame). The wearable craze has made the ticker functionality a little redundant and unnecessary for people who have, say, a Pebble or Android Wear device, but I could see the Note Edge being neat for people who don’t want or need a wearable.

Still, Apple’s event next week would have to be disastrous for me to switch to a Note Edge. Like, they’d have to announce the iPhone 6 was dropping TouchID and shrinking the screen size back down to 3.5 inches.

  2. I hung out with a friend of mine who is also a Samsung employee at CES this year. What’s so interesting is that one of the key factors I pressed him on was Samsung’s inability to closely tie hardware with great software. (BTW, this is after he told me Apple has lost their ability to innovate, not kidding) I didn’t mention the complete rip off artists that are his employer…but he was paying for dinner. Anyhow he had no answer on how Samsung could compete on the hardware/software complete package.

Samsung is making nice equipment with a huge amount of features…that no one cares about, or if they do care, they don’t know how to use them effectively. Samsung is literally throwing features at the wall with all these device releases wondering which ones will stick, pathetic use of 2010-2013 capital (which will run out eventually).

I look forward to September 9th as Apple will demonstrate to the market, their stock prices and Samsung’s market share what it looks like when you actually take time to carefully craft the right features in hardware with software.

  3. I agree that Samsung could be in trouble but honestly, how seriously do we take these analysts when they react to Apple’s new products with a yawn? Why should they be treated any differently with Samsung?

Maybe Samsung will see this as a positive sign that they’ve reached parity with Apple in more ways than just looks. I’ll be interested to see how Reuters react to next week’s event (although I’m expecting it to be a big one for Apple).

  4. How exactly is a Note Edge different from a Note without an edge? Make that little curve flat and what exactly are you losing? It’s a useless gimmick that only the most idiotic people will fall for.

  5. You’d lose the ability to view notifications and controls from a horizontal viewpoint. It’s useful at the bedside, or at a table/desk without having to pick it up. Since it’s OLED, it can fire up the pixels on only the edge of the screen, so it wouldn’t be terribly detrimental to the battery life.

Indeed, neither of those use cases would be considered groundbreaking or necessary for many people. But, conversely, simply because you don’t care for its features doesn’t mean it’s a useless purchase meant for idiots.

  6. Jokes aside? The jokes are front and center! Samsung is a lying, thieving, conniving, bribing company of criminals. They should go out of business.
