Testing the Yosemite beta? You might want to read this post by Kirk McElhearn.
Like a lot of people in my profession – and 1 million testers of the public beta – I installed pre-release versions of OS X 10.10 Yosemite to get a head start on it before it ships. I did this in a virtual machine, using VWware Fusion. About ten days ago, I noticed that I wasn’t able to access iCloud documents on some of my devices. I contacted Apple’s support, who escalated this to third-tier support person, who looked into it and found that my documents were “locked” on iCloud. He had never seen this.
Anyone else experiencing this?

As I said, I didn’t turn on iCloud Drive, but Documents & Data were on. So this shouldn’t be a problem.
From what the support technician suggested, they may be doing something soon to remedy this. He had no specific information, but, as I say above, it may be that in 10.9.5 they’ll do something on the back end to make this work. If not, as you say, this will be a big problem for anyone with devices using older OSes.
Not locked here. Just un-synced, and that cleared up about a week ago. I upgraded my iCloud account to “iCloud Drive” and wasn’t able to see changes I made to Pages docs in iOS 7 and Mavericks on other iOS 7 and Mavericks devices. Likewise, changes I made on Yosemite didn’t appear on iOS 7 or Mavericks devices. (I’m using a different account on my iOS 8 device, so I haven’t checked iOS 8 -> iOS 7 / Mavericks at all.)
And that was just for Pages and Numbers. Notes, email, Safari bookmarks all synced fine thru iCloud between iOS 7, Mavericks, and Yosemite devices.
But, as I said, that problem magically disappeared about a week ago.
Incidentally, the McElhearn.com site puts un-removable information into your Safari cache. I try removing it from the list in Privacy -> Details, but it keeps popping back after about a second. Every time.
Not even the Develop -> Empty Caches and Develop -> Disable Caches menu items can remove that info. That’s pretty fucking evil.

Mine re-appeared a week again too. But then it happened again. And I’ve never activated iCloud Drive.
I see it with other apps that store files to iCloud as well.
Huh? Yes, I think a website does put stuff into a browser cache. I don’t see what’s evil about that. Unremovable? Dunno what you mean…
Apple did a reset of iCloud drive/Documents & Data about a week ago. Logging back into Yosemite “auto-upgrades” you back to iCloud Drive. It must be a bug, I can’t imagine they would go live with that problem.
If you actually use iCloud Data & Documents, create a separate iCloud account for testing Yosemite or avoid it altogether.
I upgraded everything to iCloud Drive (I know.. but I have multiple backups) and my documents are not locked, they just don’t sync anymore. My devices are siloed again. Made me realize how much stuff I have in iCloud. My main affected apps are Mindnode, Byword, Day One, Pixelmator, Pages, Numbers, Keynote. I have to use these on just one device for now — reverting back to a few years ago when nothing synced. I can live with it for another 2 months or so until Yosemite ships. But oh boy is it annoying. All my other iCloud services are working.
Argggh. I spoke too soon. Can’t sync between iOS 7 devices an Mavericks device after activating iCloud Drive. Worked OK for a few days but not any more. Oh well, only a few more weeks to wait. (Still need to have an iOS 7 device for testing etc.)
OK, sorry, I was being a little internet-harsh. But I can’t delete the mcelhearn.com cache from Safari. (Preferences… -> Privacy -> Details, select the mcelhearn.com row, click Remove, it disappears for 1 second and returns.) Probably a Safari bug.
