Samsung has no couth

Samsung did the ALS ice bucket challenge today with its phone, pitting it against the competition. Stay classy Samsung.

  1. Worse than Bill Gates who’s ALS challenge was an obvious Surface commercial.

  2. The inevitable flip side of a stunt that encourages people and brands to brag in public about a charitable act.

As much good as this has done for ALS, Ice Bucket also encourages the most obnoxious attention-seeking tools to boast about how awesome they are. I think that accounts for at least half its popularity, if not more.

  3. To criticize Samsung for this is no better than Samsung subverting this campaign for its marketing. Stay classy Loop.

  4. You can choose to look at the cynical side, which you can find in any situation. Or you can look at the bright side – record amount of money raised for an orphan disease. The optics you choose is about who you are.

  5. I imagine charities that have experienced reductions in this month’s donations might disagree with you. Perhaps your “optics” need wider frames.

It’s nice to see a worthwhile cause supported, but if stunts like this become the new norm for successful fundraising, we all lose.
