Apple publishes diversity numbers

Certainly worth looking at the numbers and reading Tim Cook’s message.

  1. Assuming that this remains an issue and the big tech companies feel compelled to make these numbers public moving forward, it will be interesting to see how this changes, if at all, over time.

  2. when was the last time we saw a major US trucking company post its diversity numbers? or lamented the lack of women in the trucking industry? chef’s trade? iron welders?

but oh, wait, why am i supposed to care when it’s the IT industry?

please, somebody make this clear to me. anybody.

  3. US Population is 63% white people, yet Apple is only 55% white people. Am I suppose to think that Apple discriminates against white people because of these numbers? Maybe its a problem in the tech industry at large? I’m kidding, but I just find it odd that media outlets are running with the “Apple is mostly men and mostly white” slant when they clearly are a bit behind on white people when compared to the general populous in the country that constitutes the majority of Apple employees.

Only thing I get from these numbers is what I already knew. Teachers and professors in technology and science fields need to ensure equal treatment and expectations with women as men. Most folks do this but a few bad eggs ruin it for some and this turns women off from tech. That, and the fact that toys like Legos have been historically marketed to boys (this has changed recently) and dolls get marketed to girls. Boys also get action figures marketed to them which often include vehicles and robots. These things tend to get boys more interested in science and technology.

  4. Such a foolish point of view.

These reports aren’t about being hired over your diverse characteristics. It’s about the fact the tech industry has predominantly hired white males for all positions.

Apple is no different but they are working to change this and hire the best man or woman, regardless of their skin. This is the right thing to do, just not what they were doing.

  5. I’ve been on plenty of interviews, both sides of the table. Mainly corporations with large amounts of employees. Usually white people applying, and we don’t ask if they’re gay.

Does this make these companies evil? Is it their fault blacks aren’t applying?

Let me guess – the reason prisons are so predominantly black is because the man is targeting them, right?

Let’s talk about Ferguson. Utter chaos because a white cop shot a black kid. A year or two before, a black person shot another black person in the head and killed them. For no good reason. Funny, I don’t remember hearing about mass looting.

I probably sound racist. I’m not. I am, however, sick of being forced to accommodate. I’d be foolish not to hire the best person for a job, black or white. However, in today’s world, I’m a biggot and a racist if I don’t hire the black person.

    It’s a jacked up world we’ve created.

  6. PS – where’s the proof Apple is purposely hiring straight white people because they hate blacks and gays?

  7. This really isn’t about white people. It’s about furthering the LGBT agenda. Nobody rests until EVERYBODY knows they’re gay. And likes it.

  8. This is so silly I almost didn’t respond.

No one said Apple hates blacks and gays. Loving white males doesn’t mean hating all else.

“For Apple to win, Microsoft doesn’t have to lose.” [or whatever Jobs said]

  9. Great to hear you only get white guys applying. That’s awesome. [not really]

These companies recruit though. My company does too. For programming, it is dominated by white males so I don’t sweat that but non-tech (office managers, secretaries, etc) are majority white males too. That can’t be explained by “only white males applied”. If so, I’d like to see stats on that.

If you don’t think black males are targeted for crime more than any other, you are clearly disconnected from reality.

“Proportion of people incarcerated for a drug offense in state prison that are black or Hispanic, although these groups use and sell drugs at similar rates as whites: 61 percent”
    Source: http://www.drugpolicy.org/drug-war-statistics

Ferguson, again…distorting reality here. A white OFFICER shot and killed a young black man. Just read this cartoon, it’ll help you see why it is such a big deal [spoiler: IT KEEPS HAPPENING]: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2rwHHa6H3Jw/U-zubkOGwDI/AAAAAAABags/bp0t6k4lzRs/w1764-h1328-no/marlette-ferguson.jpg.

That’s not about person vs person. People kill people of all races all the time. It happens and is bad but white officers seem to keep abusing black males, way more than white counterparts. [see stats above]

You don’t sound racist, just not in touch w/ reality. I have a different view because I’m mixed white and black. I know folks far left [ie – you and several white friends/white family] and far right [several black friends/black family].

  10. That’s me, outta touch. How’s that Ferguson rhetoric holding up for ya? Poor guy, just a big ‘ol gentle giant. WHO VIOLENTLY ROBBED A STORE moments earlier. Than VIOLENTLY ATTACKED A COP and was then shot (in the front).

But you’re right, it’s the white man.

Funny thing is, you talk to most of the black folks in corporate America, or even the older black generation anywhere else, they share the EXACT SAME VIEWS. They’re embarrassed of their peeps. Pants hanging down around their knees, collecting welfare and getting high all day. I mean, you have a black president (sorta) for pete’s sake – you’re still going to run around screaming “white privilege”???

I’m actually thankful I’m not like you – I just someone on their character, not their gayness or skin color. You’re stupid little cartoon ain’t helping your cause, btw….

  11. My Ferguson comments hold up just fine: “A white OFFICER shot and killed a young black man.” I never said he was a saint and that doesn’t even matter (unrelated to shooting) but I’d rather not go back and forth addressing your regurgitated conjecture on the shooting.

But…let’s play w/ facts on your smorgusboard of stereotypes:

    • “White non-Hispanics, who make up 42 percent of the poor, receive 69 percent of government benefits…”
Source: http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/13/who-benefits-from-the-safety-net/; has been this way for years)

    • To repeat above: “Proportion of people incarcerated for a drug offense in state prison that are black or Hispanic, although these groups use and sell drugs at similar rates as whites: 61 percent”
      Source: http://www.drugpolicy.org/drug-war-statistics

    • Sagging started in prisons and has become a trend for all races, visit Houston…you’ll see white butts just as much as black sticking out. Heck…look at Bieber.

    • A “sort of Black president” who has been met with the worst opposition of any sitting president in US history while also enduring ridiculous scrutiny along the way. Yet because he was elected we should just call racism, oppression, etc over, throw our hands up and shot hallelujah to the heavens!

You don’t have to look at “most black folks in corporate America” to find people embarrassed of youthful actions. It extends beyond black America though. The sense is different in black America because we’re fighting, still, to prove our worth due to our oppressive history here; however unnecessary it may be or seem.

Never in my above statements did I blame the “white man” but you have absolutely no place stating hardships for another race without having lived it. That’s like telling a woman pregnancy is easy.

Now that I’ve given you the respect of a response. I’m happy to close this discussion down. Feel free to respond for thread-sake but I’m shutting down notifications on this one.
