The idea of 3D-printed custom earbuds called Normals is an interesting one but this advertisement for them creeps me out.
This “Normal” ad is anything but

Eeeew
It’s a lot of BS is what it is.
1) All ears are unique, but mostly its the outside bits that are unique, the canals fall into a limited few shapes.
2) The bit that they craft that’s unique to your ear is only the outside bit. Take that away, and they are the same shape and design as Apple’s earbuds.
I have not read the article so my comment may be premature, I’ll read it after this comment.
But, if the unique part is the “outside bits” and that is what this company is creating, why are you taking it away? Of course it won’t matter if you take away the unique part they are creating. Or did you mean something else?

Creepy? Kind of. But also somewhat reminiscent of Monty Python, at least to me. It’s an interesting twist and use of 3D printing at least.
Cute.
Clever
One: I’ve never owned a pair of earbuds that did not fall out of my ears within minutes of putting them in (except for in-ears). Obviously, my ears are different from most people’s. Perhaps earbuds with custom outsides stay in my ears better.
Two: Since the outside bits are unique, like you say, and this company actually customises the outside bits, I’m not sure what your point is.
Creepy? Not really.
Odd/Weird? Only the bit with the tailor and digging the smell of a person’s ear wax.
