After 17 years on Apple’s board, Bill Campbell is saying goodbye.
Apple on Thursday said the executive, who also serves as chairman of business software developer Intuit, is retiring from his role on the board. Campbell was one of the board members appointed by Steve Jobs in 1997 after he returned to run the company.
Susan Wagner, founding partner and director of asset-management company BlackRock, will join Apple’s board in Campbell’s place.
Great to see Apple taking this opportunity to put another woman on the board of directors.

Because I like women. They are some of my favourite people.
I have four sisters and most of my friends are women and I love women. Still these types of statements, while well intentioned, are misguided. I do not mean that in a mean spirited way either.

OK, knock off the direct personal attack. This is not the place for it.
I agree with Shawn. Speaking only for myself, half the human population are women but they tend to be very underrepresented in places of power like Apple’s board and executive suite, not to mention the tech world in general. Assuming similarly high qualifications amongst candidates of different demographic backgrounds, I believe it is advantageous to seek out a mix that more accurately represents the world at large. Demographic diversity contributes to a more diverse world view, and that’s a good thing in my opinion.
And Bill Campbell is chairman of a company that lobbies our government to keep our tax code complicated enough to require their software. The moneyed people were always there.
It’s been almost 3 years now, I guess it irks me a bit more than I thought.
I’m so tired of people purporting to know what or what Steve Jobs would or would not have done, thought or otherwise.

Agreed as long as the assumption that “similarly high qualifications amongst candidates of different demographic backgrounds, I believe it is advantageous..” Is true. I worry that hiring for the sake of hiring (woman, minority, etc.) for any other reason could be damaging. Radical rights don’t need any more fuel.
Not that they need it I guess. Lies seem to work just as well for extremists.
