Fragmentation is the enemy of any operating system. When you have a wide spread in adoption, you end up with a problem for both the company (resources spent supporting multiple OSes) and developers (the more platforms you have to support, the higher your costs, the tougher to make money). Fragmentation is also the enemy of security. Hard to prevent malware when your users aren’t keeping up with your latest patches.
90% is a huge adoption rate. Android has some catching up to do here.
I would love to put iOS 7 on my two iPod Touches. Sadly they are too old.
I always wonder who the 10% are in these articles, and then I realized by dad’s iPhone 4 is still running iOS 6. Still, great numbers.
Would be interesting to see a device breakdown. I wonder how many original iPads and old iPod touches there are making up that number.
Do the 10% include even devices which are not capable of running iOS 7 or only those which can run iOS ?
The former, if I’m reading it right.
I’d love to know the latter, too – it suggests to me that more than 90% (though perhaps not much more; depends on the proportions in active use) of the iOS-7-capable devices are using it.
