The landmark partnership aims to redefine the way work will get done, address key industry mobility challenges and spark true mobile-led business change—grounded in four core capabilities:
- a new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions including native apps, developed exclusively from the ground up, for iPhone and iPad;
- unique IBM cloud services optimized for iOS, including device management, security, analytics and mobile integration;
- new AppleCare® service and support offering tailored to the needs of the enterprise; and
- new packaged offerings from IBM for device activation, supply and management.
Tim Cook speaking to Re/code:
“If you were building a puzzle they would fit nicely together with no overlap,” Cook said of the relationship. “We do not compete on anything. And when you do that you end up with something better than either of you could produce yourself.”
That sums up why this deal is so good for both companies. Since there is no overlap, both will benefit equally in making this work.
This is huge news. Trivially, think about all the IBM PC kiosks/cash-registers that can now be iPads the way more boutique stores do it.
I wonder if the AppleCare for Enterprise stuff will extend to Macs.

I don’t get it. I’m glad Apple is starting to acknowledge that their products are used in different ways in businesses than they are at home, but why does it require a tie-in with IBM? What concrete things are actually coming out of this? This seems awfully Microsoft-like. Hope we get more details soon.
What’s wrong with Apple becoming Microsoft like in the enterprise? If this means that down the road Siri is powered by Watson then that is good for all Apple consumers.

Not sure how much of a roadmap Steve Jobs left, but clearly Tim Cook has a very long view.
IBM is trusted in the enterprise. MS is merely tolerated….I’m setting up some touch-enabled apps on win81 and these brand new top of the line machines are blue screening repeatedly.
so bring in a trusted enterprise player and pair it with a computing device beloved by consumers? sounds like a great plan. one that the typically Apple-shy IT leaders can get behind.

There is no tie in on Apple’s part.
It is IBM that is developing exclusively
for IOS.
Apple is just letting them be the reseller
for Enterprise that require such things.
Lock out is just for Android and WP.
Otherwise it is no benefit for Apple to
even do a Press Release.
Thanks, I saw that post by Asymco too. I think the AppleCare thing is really important for Macs, I’m less “concerned” about native Mac apps.
My point of view, as an employee using a Mac with an MSFT/IE dominated App UX is that apps don’t work (full stop). With this push into the enterprise, it’s a big step in making sure IT in general changes their attitude around Apps working on Macs. I’m probably not being so clear, but this is a big long term thing.
