Judge for yourself. Here’s ad number one, the crying baby ad:
Is it just me or is this truly an awful ad? Annoying in that fingernails on a chalk board way. Apple feelings aside, anyone like this ad from a creative standpoint? Is it at all attractive?
Moving on, here’s ad number two:
This one is not quite as annoying, but where’s the clever? Did Samsung just switch ad agencies? I think both of these ads are amateurish and dreadful.

The instance were you are looking at two things at once is more gimmick than feature. I can’t think of a time were I though, boy, I sure wish my screen would split in two so that I could see half of two things. Hell, even the picture on picture on my TV never gets used, at least by me.
My big issue with these is that they are basically implausible. In what world would they not have a TV. Heck the dad would be off at the sports bar getting drunk while watching the game. Not to mention the underlying message of ‘we will help you do a better job of not socializing with your kid’. Look at Apple’s parenthood video for a comparison. Kids and parents out in the real world, learning and playing and socializing. And using their iStuff.
Advertising works by appealing to emotion. Especially positive emotion. The ad makes you feel good, you want to feel that again, go buy the product. Which ad gives you the happy feels. Regardless of the product offered.
The first ad is just so terrible. I can only imagine nobody involved in it had a kid, because the kid would be crying just as hard after split screen as before.
Yeah, they’re both pretty bad. The first ad is noisy and screechy and simply hard to watch. The second ad is back to specs! and consumers just won’t get it. Watching that second ad a normal person will hear “Blah blah blah blabbity blah”. The nerds among us will cry “But AMOLED!” Nobody cares. And I doubt the real world difference is really that dramatic. There’s this pesky thing called observable reality. If the ‘problem’ you present in your advertising doesn’t ring true with consumers, you’re dead in the water. These ads remind me of bad infomercials.
The second one is pretty standard, it’s misleading, but then that’s what commercials do.
The first one is just atrocious on every level though. The music, the timing, the acting … everything is just “off.” The advertising folks that green lighted it must be blind or insane. The googley eyes on the kid alone are horrifying.
On par with apple ads.
But true – not as funny/ witty as wall huggers.
Yes, these ads don’t seem finished – they are like prototypes or something. And besides that, they are annoying and not funny or cute.
I thought they were good.
Three features shown as real-life benifits, not boring stats.
At least one is coming in ios8, hopefully two.
Been asking this on other boards as well, but has Samsung actually done any paid placements for these ads (or their Wall Huggers spot, for that matter)? IMO, these come across as awful and amateurish because they’re merely intended to stir things up on tech sites and generate page clicks.
Like the even more awful Galaxy Gear skiing spot, which never ran on any paid media, I get the impression that Samsung just put this stuff out on YouTube and guns for the free publicity.
As for these spots, the timing is just horrific and seems to have been produced by committee without any regard for context or cultural awareness.
What’s even more funny than the “wall hugger” campaign is that Samsung is the largest provider of “mobile charging stations” at airports.
Tone-deaf. And the voice-overs sound like they’re being done by an artist whose first language was not English, which adds a thin layer of oddness in an American market.
LOL, Yeah – Airports – 10+ hour flights.
Seems like apple should do something similar on subway stations.
LOL, what percentage of flights are 10+ hours long?
Here’s a hint: only few commercial airplanes can fly 10+ hours: i.e., Boeing 777-200LR, Boeing 747-400 Longreach and the Airbus A380. (So, a pretty small percentage.)
The vast majority of all commercial flights are short- and medium-haul — basically up to 6 hours.
Both the clueless dad and the ugly kid are begging to be pepper-sprayed right in the eyes.
At least 90% of my flights are 10+ hours.
