How do you keep track of all the digital detritus in your life? I’ve got an encrypted file containing all my critical info, including account numbers, passwords, and lists of various things, like the location of my car title. My kids all know the location of this file and the password to decrypt the file.
Reading this article, I’m wondering if that’s enough.
We die for a reason. The question to ask yourself is why not let your digital life follow your real life in the grave.
Many parents fall into the trap of thinking they need to replicate their life for their children.
But your children won’t care about the things you care about. They won’t listen to the music you like, they won’t like the movies you did, and they will likely not work what you work.
So I think our digital self disappearing when we do, is possibly the best way to handle this.
Yes, indeed.
Just make sure they can get to all of the money.
That and how you raised your children is all that anyone really cares about.
I look at it from a different POV. I die and it would be nice for my Facebook friends etc to know. I might have outstanding bills that I long since switched to paperless billing and so on.
And even with something like my iTunes purchases. Back in the day those were VHS tapes and DVDs that my kids could keep or trash. Why not let them have my online buys as well.
Yes, but also because some children will like the things you care about. Some will listen to the music you like, the movies you did and will want to experience many things you did. It’s better to give them the choice than let a lives worth of what you have enjoyed go to waste or disappear.
I think the best way to handle things after we are gone is to let the generation left behind handle it in whatever way they choose. But to at least make it an available option.
