I had one of the cassette models when I was a kid.

This “history” always amazes me. The Walkman was a stolen product. I used to ski with one of these http://unofficialnetworks.com/sony-walkman-astraltune-92977/ long before the Walkman was even a glint in Sony’s eye. They were very big out West. I met the whole Astraltunes crew out in Sparks, NV at their warehouse. What a great group. Too bad to this day they still don’t get the credit they deserve.

Same here Jim. And I was in Iran 🙂 I still have the demo tape for it knocking about in my parents attic. Always remember the song on the B side of the tape. Which was Diamonds are Forever, performed by Hideki Matsutake & K.I.Capsule. Only reason I know this is because it took me 15 years to find the song and the album. Had to buy it from Amazon Japan 2 years ago.
I liked the look of the later “sports” models that Sony put out, but I usually went with Aiwa’s competing models for portable music/recording.

You’re old… 🙂
I’m getting all nostalgic about 8-track
Here’s another nice history (and beautiful pictures) of the original Walkman: http://www.minimallyminimal.com/blog/sony-walkman-tps-l2

Yes, I’m old too.
