World Cup madness begins today

Every four years, the world spins off its axis for this spot of fun. Brazil vs. Croatia. Let the games begin.

  1. Can’t get down with all this bad stuff happening in Brazil. Totally kills any excitement I had about the Cup. Apparently the Rio airport workers are stirking just this moment so yeah total clusterfuck replete with drugs, child prostitution and extreme poverty. But sure, go World Cup! /s

  2. It’s probably possible to pay attention to both at the same time and use the World Cup as a way to bring notice to some of the bad stuff that is going on and possibly get something done about it. In fact, you just posting this will likely get me to search for that — not that I can do much from the US except call attention to it also or give money to some organization or other (and hope the organization is legit and useful).

Of course, every country has their bad sides, too, so there are a lot of houses to get in order…

  3. Yeah, MH, bogs me down a little, too. But, as we say, We’re Brazilians, and we never give up.

But that what’s really happening here is the same that’s happening all around the world nowadays, moreso since the crisis of 2008: sheer Schadenfreude.
