a Chinese company bought Motorola, China …. the place where billions of cheap labor resides.
So Google makes hay about the Nexus Q being made in America. The tech press oohs and ahhs and points to others saying “See, you can make products in America, you’re evil if you don’t”. Then the Nexus Q never even ships.
Google and Motorola make hay about the Moto X being made in America. The tech press again points at the rest of the industry and says “If they can do it why can’t you? You’re evil!”. Now, less than a year later the factory closes due to “higher costs and disappointing sales”.
Anyone think Google waves the American flag just like the “Open” flag? It’s just PR, they don’t care about the people working at these places that get jerked around because they were a tool of the Google marketing machine.
Well, it is PR, too. But assembling Motorola phones in the US was also a clever trick to avoid quick intervention by the ITC in case of patent disputes. Domestic products can only be sued through regular courts, which takes forever. Now that all issues with Apple have been settled, the patriotism that never was can take the back seat…
That’s bad news for a great Texas town/city.
