“Nest is being run independently from the rest of Google, with a separate management team, brand and culture,” he said in an emailed statement. “For example, Nest has a paid-for business model, while Google has generally had an ads-supported business model. We have nothing against ads — after all Nest does lots of advertising. We just don’t think ads are right for the Nest user experience.”
I really like Nest CEO Tony Fadell. It’s not him I don’t trust, it’s the Google bosses.
This is refreshing news to all of us who invested in buying a Nest thermostat. I really like the two I have in my house and I think it is also saving us money. Hard to tell, since I need to compare my usage from last year, from before I had the Nests installed.
Bless his heart if he thinks Google paid him $3.2B just to sell some hardware.
If only he read blogs comments he’d know better.
I’m curious how sales have been since Nest was acquired. I’ve not bought the Nest I had planned to purchase this spring because I don’t trust Google. I even saw the current thermostat on sale the other day, which really surprised me and makes me wonder if there’s a connection. And now to see Mr. Fadell trying to say that it’s not a Google thermostat… . Wow.
I’d like to trust him, but I don’t trust them.
Google would sell advertising on underwear if they could. They are the most shameless of all the ad pimps.
Ads or no ads “on thermostats”, that’s not the bottom line. Fadell must know the valuable data sucked from his customers’s homes will be used by Google.
Isn’t this is a question of when not if? And given Google’s charter this is to be expected. That’s why some people avoid their products.
As usual, truth makes knee-jerk reactions from the other post look silly.
No.
not at all. google stated, in black & white, that they may serve ads on thermostats. that has not changed, regardless of Fadell’s statement.
“Google to start serving ads on Nest thermostats”

That title alone is knee-jerk and silly.
Then let’s look at your sillyness:
“oh, so what other thermostats does google sell? you know, since they specifically mentioned ads on thermostats?”

The comments were in relation to something completely different. Just read a bit about it before bandwagoning with Jim and the others reporting this incorrectly.
