Some good advice from Chris Barylick. The Mac is not a major target, but it never hurts to check.

Been using ClamXav and its active scanning Sentry feature for years on my MacBook Pro and it ‘s worked great – found a Word macro virus in half a dozen Word files a while back (including the resume file I’d been sending out to employers!). Looks like the Sentry feature isn’t available in the latest ClamXav if you download it from the Mac app store, according to the article comments. (I also use Sophos’ free Mac product, though I had to turn off on-access scanning for it because it was messing with my Spotlight directory when jumping between OS versions on different partitions.)
Remember, we live in a mixed platform world. ClamXav has been part of my workflow for several years.
Trusting free anti-virus software is a fool’s errand on par with trusting Facebook for your personal finances or medical records…. what’s in it for them to give you that service for free?
