Pioneer Corporation today announced one of the first aftermarket in-dash car multimedia systems to provide Apple CarPlay, allowing consumers the ability to upgrade the vehicle they already own to the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone® in the car. CarPlay compatibility will be available in early summer 2014 via a firmware update to the five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.
CarPlay is gaining momentum.
Hopefully this will come to the (much cheaper) non-navigation models for the 2015 model year.
No sense paying a minimum of $700 for navigation you won’t be using.
im certain it will come to the AppRadio line before long. AR is a 2-DIN model which supports touch, and retails for $300-400. compatible iOS apps can use it as a big external touch display…so CP is right up its alley.
the NEX series are $700-1400, so firmware upgrade is a clearer priority for those customers. dunno if existing AR3 will get get the free love.
I agree market position is definitely part of it, but Pioneer’s also been pretty vocal about the NEX series having newer, much faster processors.
What probably none of us outside of Pioneer know is how much of the existing AppRadio and non-NEX line could actually support an upgrade. It’s possible there’s just no juice even in the AR3 for CarPlay.
