Office for iPad and Mac: What’s next

The Office for iPad engineering team answered questions this morning on Reddit, offering a peak at what’s to come for the app as well as what went into designing it.

Some great tidbits of info in here.

  1. “Microsoft developed Office for iPad completely natively”

Reads to me like they didn’t use Xamarin… which is a GOOD THING, especially if you’re concerned about optimizing the app’s performance and ensuring that it continues to play nice long-term on iOS devices.

But then again, we should expect as much from a company like Microsoft.

  2. I still say that Office for iPad should be properly named ‘Office File Reader for iPad’. The tie to Office 365 for actual functionality makes things worse than useless for us, since our institution has a site license for Office.

(and no, after the year-long rolling catastrophe that was our miserable experiment with BPOS, we’re not moving to Office 365 any time soon. If the campus IT tried that again they’d get the full pitchforks and torches, tar-and-feathering routine.)
