Political move? Russians shelve iPads

Journalists spotted that ministers at a cabinet meeting were no longer using Apple tablets, and minister Nikolai Nikiforov confirmed the changeover “took place not so long ago.”

He said the ministers’ new Samsungs were “specially protected devices that can be used to work with confidential information.”

Something smells fishy here.

Nikiforov denied that Russia was clamping down on US technology in response to Western sanctions imposed over its takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.

Ah, that was it. Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck. Political bullshit is what it is.

  1. It’s too bad Americans don’t support Americans and buy American products. Instead they give 100% of their money to Korea and Taiwan. Even the Whitehouse is apparently testing LG and Samsung smartphones to replace their blackberries. Pathetic.

  2. Their loss. They’ve unwittingly punched themselves in the nutz while trying to stick it to us.

  3. you can blame the techo-priests who for years scorned anything Apple, going back to the WIMP vs command-line wars. later sided w/ Windows because they didnt want to surrender to Mac. now avoiding iOS/Apple again, citing “closed” this and “walled garden” that, anything to avoid admitting they were wrong and have beem wrong for decades.

  4. That’s stupid. If that was true, they can still buy from motorola with their android phones. Sometimes, not everything is about Apple. “Oh no, they bought non-apple products! It’s because they are stupid idiots who followed the windows koolaid! If only they were smart like me who only buys apple products no matter what! Even the Hifi and socks! Now ill go and ping with my friends about this.”

  5. Contrary to popular belief, even though build quality sucks, the samsung tablets are not THAT bad. They still are android and android is a decent enough OS. It would only be really bad if they actually wrote proprietary minister software for iOS and they have to rewrite it or something.

  6. Good luck to them with that. So, not only is Putin completely economically hamstringing his country, he’s saddling it with inferior technology as well. Nice move. I wish the previous administration was as adept at suckering other countries to engage in such poor geopolitical moves. Would’ve saved a lot of lives and tax dollars here in the US…

  7. Maybe American companies should make better products, then?

(There are, to my knowledge, zero cell phones worth even considering made in the United States.

iPhones are, after all, made in China.)

  8. Android isn’t sufficiently “inferior” to matter in such a context.

I far prefer iOS myself, but frankly this means nothing.
