Virgin America cancels #nerdbird flights

Bummer. I thought this was a cool idea. The #nerdbird flew between Mineta San Jose International Airport and LAX.

  1. This flight never made sense; apparently the flights were often less than half-full. VX’s hub is in SFO, so most VX travelers fly through there. The remaining SJC-LAX carriers use regional planes and have lots of connecting options in LAX. Southwest, on the other hand, fills another niche by flying to other cities in the LA area.

So, basically, Virgin picked a heavily-competitive route and didn’t offer anything new on it.

  2. choices are limited too: I just did a quick check. VA (SJX LAX) has 4 flights, SWA has 9 (SFO to LAX). more options from SWA, I know people who have fly down in the AM, back at night. VA is much more limited.

  3. I see their problem: they called a flight from SJC to LAX “nerdbird?” That’s the term for SJC>AUS. What nerds ever fly from Silicon Valley to Los Angeles for work?
