It’s been a slow and steady fall for Windows, for as far back as NetMarketshare has been collecting this data. And for the Mac, the reverse is true. Mac market share was 4.58% back in February 2009 and has steadily climbed to its current share of 8.16%.
Mac market share breaks 8%, Windows falls below 90%
As Mac users, we were always told to ignore market share. Now that Apple has a non-embarrassing number, this is important how?
It’s not as important as it is indicative of a cultural change. We know Apple is about profit share, but this indicator means way more to Microsoft and the remaining commodity computer manufacturers.
While the trend is right, I’d take these latest figures with a bucket of salt. The average movement for Windows has been -0.1% per month. This was almost -0.9%. I suspect that it won’t actually go below 90% for about 6 months or so.
It also means something to Mac users who have been using Mac’s long enough to have been around in the days when Windows users scoffed at us for having “no programs” and being unimportant do to our low numbers. Although on some level I miss those days. You know back when you actually knew the people you were conversing with and showed some respect.. Sorry, going off on a tangent here. Suffice it to say, this is not a recent discussion but rather an old one. You are probably just not aware of it.
I suspect that change will accelerate.
Understood, JH. But how many of those Mac users who’d still care about the emotional significance of this reversal of fortunes actually constitute the majority of Apple’s current customer base?
Not many I’m sure.
My point to Terry was really just about how plod this topic concerning Macs and market share goes. It is not related to the newer topic of market share vs. profit as it relates to iPhones. Different subject/topic.
