Ars Technica:
If you’ve been thinking about buying an Apple TV, Apple is trying to sweeten the deal for the next few days. Between now and March 5, anyone who buys an Apple TV in one of Apple’s stores or on its online store will get a $25 iTunes gift card with their purchase.
Anyone think this is a clearing out of stock ahead of a product refresh?
At $74, it’s still a good value even if it’s about to become obsolete.
Just attach it to your bathroom TV when the next-gen aTV is released.
If I had the $$, I’d buy an extra one at that price to put in my travel/presentation bag so I don’t have to keep “lugging” the home/office one around.
What’s interesting is that, at least in the iPad app, there is no mention this is a limited time offer. It makes it sound like it is now just part of the package. Which makes sense because they would want folks using the iTunes Store with the ATV and what better way to encourage that than free money
Edit: checked the website and the date is listed. Still think it would have been a better move to just add it to the product.
AppleTV’s new presence on the store. Solid hardware and OS rumours. The $25 rebate. And today’s comments from Tim Cook. It certainly seems like it’s gearing up to something…
I’d say let’s keep an eye out for Event Invites not too long after the rebate ends.
I can’t see Apple doing an event just for a new Apple TV.
I would normally agree, though if this version is the start of AppleTV as a “platform” with new content deals, game support, etc, then there definitely could be 45 minutes of material to talk about. Throw in standard updates and perhaps a MacMini refresh, and there you go.
On the flip side, imagine trying to fit the contents of that presentation into a WWDC keynote already stuffed with iOS and OSX update info.
But you could be right.
But in another similar story on the site, Jim says “nope” to this being because of a product refresh.
People have tvs in their bathroom?
Agreed. Unless it is something huge like a real TV set, I don’t see them making it an event.
Now what I do see is what they did with the Mac Pro at WWDC last year. They do their sales talk then perhaps announce new displays which are ‘TV worthy’ and a new Apple TV box. Which segues into talking about iOS 8 which has new Apple TV features. And so on.
yeah the lack of unified narrative on this site is odd.
